Moving & migration

Move without losing visitors.

Two cases: you switch from another system to KLXM Studio – or you move an existing installation to a new server.

Case 1

From the old website.

Best built on a test domain, switching the domain only at the end.

  1. Structure and kit

Choose a kitIn KLXM Studio, the package of design and building blocks for a website: layout, colours, fonts and the matching blocks. A kit can be adapted or switched – the content stays. (see Kits), create the page tree – the kit’s starter content provides sample pages for the usual areas.

  2. Bring over content

Paste texts into the editor (formatting is cleaned up) or have them imported via the REST APIWidely used form of programming interface over HTTP: content is retrieved, created or changed via addresses, usually in JSON format.en.wikipedia.org (opens in a new tab) or MCPModel Context Protocol: open standard through which AI assistants access tools and data. Via an MCP server, such assistants can, for example, read a website’s content or create drafts.modelcontextprotocol.io (opens in a new tab) – for example with KLXM AI from the old page. Everything arrives as a draft and is published only after review.

  3. Structured data

Import events, jobs, properties or posts from RSS/Atom, JSONSimple text format for structured data that people can read and programs can process easily. The standard for data exchange via web interfaces.en.wikipedia.org (opens in a new tab), XMLText format for structured data with markup in angle brackets. Many feeds and exchange formats (e.g. RSS, OpenImmo) are based on it.en.wikipedia.org (opens in a new tab) or OpenImmoIndustry standard in German-speaking countries for exchanging property listings between estate agent software and portals or websites.openimmo.de (opens in a new tab) into a data tableStructured content such as team, events, products or references: entries with the same fixed fields that can appear on several pages – often with a detail page per entry. via mapping – once or continuously synchronised.

  4. Media

Drag in many files at once; maintain alt textShort description of an image in the page’s code. Screen readers read it aloud, search engines evaluate it; purely decorative images get an empty alt text.w3.org (opens in a new tab) and credits right away. Videos get a poster and captionsText of what is spoken in a video, shown in sync. On the web usually a WebVTT file; captions help deaf people and anyone watching without sound.developer.mozilla.org (opens in a new tab).

  5. Redirect old addresses

Import a list of old addresses as CSV or JSON (301 to the new page, 410 for removed ones). After launch the 404 log shows what is still missing.

    Tools → Redirects
    php bin/console redirects:import move.csv --dry-run
    php bin/console redirects:import move.csv
  6. Switch the domain

Set the canonical address in the basic settings, switch DNS, set up the certificate – done. The sitemap reports the new addresses.

Case 2

To a new server.

Move an existing installation with all its content.

  1. Back up on the old server

Database, media and configuration per website; pools and shared tables separately.

    SSH
    php bin/console site:backup --all --out=/tmp/move
    php bin/console pool:backup --all --out=/tmp/move
    php bin/console shared:backup --all --out=/tmp/move
  2. Take along separately

config/config.local.php (keys of the main website, network_key) and config/sites/*.php – without them encrypted settings cannot be read. Plus storage/support/ and storage/ai/config.json if used.

  3. Install anew

Install the same or a newer version (see Installation), copy the configuration files into place.

  4. Restore

    SSH
    php bin/console site:restore /tmp/move/default-….tar.gz --force
    php bin/console site:restore /tmp/move/client-….tar.gz --force --site=client
    php bin/console pool:restore /tmp/move/pool-….tar.gz --force
php bin/console migrate --all && php bin/console health --all
  5. Test and switch

Check via the hosts file or a test domain, then switch DNS. passkeySign-in without a password: a key pair is stored on your device and unlocked with a fingerprint, face recognition or PIN. Passkeys are largely immune to phishing.fidoalliance.org (opens in a new tab) keep working as long as the domain stays the same.

Only moving one website of a multi-site? Use site:extract – see “Extracting a website”.
