Glossary

Technical terms briefly explained – from A to Z.

A

accessibility (accessible, digital accessibility, web accessibility) Accessibility
Designing and building websites so that everyone can use them – including people with visual, hearing or motor impairments, with a screen reader or by keyboard only.
AI assistant (AI assistants) AI
Program that uses artificial intelligence to handle tasks in natural language – such as suggesting texts, translating or answering questions. Results should always be reviewed by people.
alt text (alternative text, alt texts) Accessibility
Short description of an image in the page’s code. Screen readers read it aloud, search engines evaluate it; purely decorative images get an empty alt text.
API (application programming interface) Interfaces
Application programming interface: programs use it to exchange data without the user interface – for example to take over entries from another system.

B

block (blocks) KLXM Studio
Building block of a page, such as text, image, gallery, map or form. You put pages together from blocks; each block has fields for its content and options for its display.

C

CalDAV (CardDAV, CalDAV/CardDAV) Interfaces
Open standards for synchronising calendars (CalDAV) and address books (CardDAV) between a server and programs such as Outlook, Thunderbird or a smartphone.
captions (caption, subtitles, WebVTT) Accessibility
Text of what is spoken in a video, shown in sync. On the web usually a WebVTT file; captions help deaf people and anyone watching without sound.
CDN (content delivery network) Technology
Content delivery network: network of servers that delivers files such as images or scripts close to the visitor. The CDN provider learns the visitors’ IP addresses in the process.
CMS (content management system, content management systems) Basics
Content management system: software you use to maintain the content of your website yourself – text, images, pages – without having to write code.
Content Security Policy (CSP, Content-Security-Policy) Security
Server header that specifies from which sources a page may load scripts, styles, images and so on. It makes attacks such as cross-site scripting considerably harder.
cron (cron job, cron jobs) Operations
Scheduling service of the server that starts tasks regularly on its own – for example updating the search index, creating backups or fetching feeds.

D

data processing agreement (DPA, data processing agreements) Law & licences
If a service provider processes personal data on your behalf (e.g. hosting), you need a contract with it under Art. 28 GDPR – the data processing agreement (DPA).
data table (data tables) KLXM Studio
Structured content such as team, events, products or references: entries with the same fixed fields that can appear on several pages – often with a detail page per entry.
deploy (deployment) Operations
Transferring a new software version to the server so that it runs there. In KLXM Studio this concerns the code – the content of the live website stays untouched.

E

embedding (embeddings, vectors) AI
Sequence of numbers with which an AI describes the meaning of a text. Similar content has similar embeddings – semantic search is based on this.

G

GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) Law & licences
The EU General Data Protection Regulation has governed since May 2018 how personal data may be processed – on websites too, for example with forms, statistics or embedded services.

H

HTTPS Security
The encrypted variant of HTTP: pages and form data are transmitted protected by TLS. Recognisable by “https://” in the address.

J

JSON Interfaces
Simple text format for structured data that people can read and programs can process easily. The standard for data exchange via web interfaces.
JSON-LD (structured data, Schema.org) Web
Format for structured data in a page’s code: it tells search engines in machine-readable form what the page is about – such as organisation, event or article (vocabulary of schema.org).

K

kit (kits) KLXM Studio
In KLXM Studio, the package of design and building blocks for a website: layout, colours, fonts and the matching blocks. A kit can be adapted or switched – the content stays.

L

landing page (landing pages) Web
Stand-alone entry page for a campaign or an offer, often under its own domain. In KLXM Studio it still belongs to the same website and administration.

M

MCP (Model Context Protocol, MCP server) AI
Model Context Protocol: open standard through which AI assistants access tools and data. Via an MCP server, such assistants can, for example, read a website’s content or create drafts.
media pool (media pools) KLXM Studio
Shared media library for several websites of one installation: images and files exist once and can be used on all participating websites.
MIT licence (MIT License, MIT license) Law & licences
Very permissive open-source licence: the software may be used, modified and redistributed – commercially, too – as long as the copyright notice is kept.
MySQL (MariaDB, MySQL/MariaDB) Technology
Widely used database servers for websites. MariaDB is a largely compatible, free continuation of MySQL.

O

Ollama AI
Free software for running AI language models on your own computers or servers – without texts being sent to external cloud providers.
open source (open-source, open-source software) Law & licences
Software whose source code is public and may be used, examined and modified under a free licence. This creates transparency and independence from individual vendors.
OpenAPI Interfaces
Standard that describes a REST API in a machine-readable way. Documentation, test tools and client code for the integration can be generated from it.
OpenImmo Interfaces
Industry standard in German-speaking countries for exchanging property listings between estate agent software and portals or websites.
OpenStreetMap Web
Free world map maintained by a worldwide community. Its data may be used freely with attribution – including for maps on websites.

P

passkey (passkeys, WebAuthn) Security
Sign-in without a password: a key pair is stored on your device and unlocked with a fingerprint, face recognition or PIN. Passkeys are largely immune to phishing.
PHP Technology
Widely used programming language for websites. KLXM Studio is written in PHP and therefore runs on almost any common web hosting.

R

REST API (REST, REST APIs) Interfaces
Widely used form of programming interface over HTTP: content is retrieved, created or changed via addresses, usually in JSON format.
RSS (RSS feed, Atom) Interfaces
Format for news feeds: a website provides new posts as a list that other programs or websites can fetch automatically.

S

S/MIME Security
Standard for encrypting and signing e-mails with certificates. Only the intended recipient can read a message – including form requests from a website.
SEO (search engine optimisation, search engine optimization) Web
Search engine optimisation: measures that help a website to be found well on Google and others – from helpful content and page titles to fast loading times and clean technology.
SQLite Technology
Database in a single file, without a separate database server. Ideal for small and medium-sized websites: easy to back up and to move.
SSO (single sign-on) Security
Single sign-on: sign in once and use several applications or websites without having to sign in again each time.
staging (staging environment, staging site) Operations
Test environment that mirrors the live website. New features and content can be checked there before they go online – search engines stay locked out.

T

two-factor sign-in (two-factor authentication, two-factor, 2FA, TOTP) Security
Sign-in with two proofs, such as a password plus a six-digit code from an app (TOTP). Even if the password becomes known, the account stays protected.

W

WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines) Accessibility
International W3C guidelines for accessible web content. Level AA of WCAG 2.1 is the basis of the European standard EN 301 549 and thus of the requirements of the European Accessibility Act.

X

XML Interfaces
Text format for structured data with markup in angle brackets. Many feeds and exchange formats (e.g. RSS, OpenImmo) are based on it.
