Extracting a website

From a multi-site to its own instance.

A client moves to their own server, a project outgrows the network: one command turns a website into a complete installation that runs right away. The original stays unchanged.

In the copy

What comes along.

In the new installation the chosen website is the only one.

  • Code, kit, extensions

The installation’s code without development ballast, the website’s kitIn KLXM Studio, the package of design and building blocks for a website: layout, colours, fonts and the matching blocks. A kit can be adapted or switched – the content stays. and only its active extensions.

  • Data and media

Database (consistent even while running), media, search index and the media poolShared media library for several websites of one installation: images and files exist once and can be used on all participating websites. the website uses.

  • Keys

The configuration with the website’s own key – encrypted settings such as the mail password stay readable.

  • Check and guide

The copy is checked right away; EIGENE-INSTANZ.md lists all further steps.

Step by step

How to extract.

  1. Create the copy

With the website’s short name. --archive also packs a .tar.gz for uploading.

    site:extract
    php bin/console site:extract client --out=/path/client --archive
  2. Read the notes

The command reports what does not come along: shared data tableStructured content such as team, events, products or references: entries with the same fixed fields that can appear on several pages – often with a detail page per entry. (data:unshare first), network accounts, sessions. The website’s own accounts and passkeySign-in without a password: a key pair is stored on your device and unlocked with a fingerprint, face recognition or PIN. Passkeys are largely immune to phishing.fidoalliance.org (opens in a new tab) remain.

  3. To the target server

Upload the folder or archive, document root on public, PHPWidely used programming language for websites. KLXM Studio is written in PHP and therefore runs on almost any common web hosting.php.net (opens in a new tab) 8.4, write permissions – as in the installation.

  4. Check and set up cron

    health
    php bin/console health
    php bin/console site:list # only: default
  5. Switch

Check via a test domain, then point the domains’ DNS to the new server and set up SSL.

  6. Clean up the original

Only once everything runs: remove config/sites/<shortname>.php, storage/sites/<shortname> and public/sites/<shortname> in the original.

MySQLWidely used database servers for websites. MariaDB is a largely compatible, free continuation of MySQL.mariadb.org (opens in a new tab): the copy initially points to the same database – create a new one before starting and import the enclosed dump.
